Doody ReviewsReviewer: Valerie L. Ng, PhD MD (Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital)
Description: What is most important about this update of a comprehensive textbook on urinalysis is that it resurrects and retains the invaluable urine sediment photomicrographs presented in Sister Graff's original book (A Handbook of Routine Urinalysis (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1983).
Purpose: The purpose is to retain Sister Graff's original material on urinalysis, while updating it and including information on other body fluids. These worthy objectives are well met by this edition.
Audience: This book would be useful to anyone interested in urinalysis or body fluid examination — CLT/MLT or CLS/MLS students or practitioners, medical students, allied health students or practitioners, pathology or laboratory medicine residents early in training, or practicing pathologists needing a comprehensive atlas of urine sediment or notable body fluid findings.
Features: For all of you who trained, practiced, and relied on Sister Graff's historic urinalysis book, you can breathe now. It's back — better than ever. The authors have done a commendable job of retaining all of the urine sediment photomicrographs. They have enhanced it by including five introductory chapters (urinalysis clinical laboratory operations, renal anatomy/physiology/urine formation, etc.) , followed by chapter six, which is Sister Graff's atlas of urine sediment photomicrographs, followed by chapters on cerebrospinal fluid, serous fluids, synovial fluid, semen analysis, fecal analysis, and miscellaneous body fluids. The final chapter covers automation. I like this entire book. What really caught my eye was the list of figures at the very beginning; it is breathtaking in its scope. This book would be worth its price for the figures alone, even if the color reproduction is not always faithful. My one gripe is that this is a paperback. It will be frequently used, likely at the testing bench, and destroyed quickly once urine or other fluids are inadvertently spilled on it. A really nice feature mitigating its inevitable destruction from overuse is its easy availability via the web. This online access is very helpful, allowing access electronically and remotely at will, even at the bench if the lab workstations have Internet accessibility.
Assessment: Finally! An updated and more inclusive successor to the time-honored Sister Graff's urinalysis book. Get it
