The first edition was published as by Macmillan in 1990. The second separates grammar and usage, provides more material for second- language learners and verb forms and tense and less on sentence combining, replaces classical transformational grammar with a new descriptive grammar, and adds a glossary of grammatical terms without pronunciation guides.
