Basher Basics: Grammar created and illustrated by Simon Basher, Written by Mary Budzik:

It used to be that learning grammar was one of the most boring exercises ever, but not anymore! Using his trademark personality-based approach, Basher illustrates each grammar basic - from parts of speech to sentence components to groupings and agreements - with its own character, who explains exactly what makes them tick and how they are used. Plenty of practical advice will help everyone unravel the rules and regulations of the English language. The book's cutting edge design and innovative approach will make it perfect reference for linguists of all ages who struggle to remember the difference between a preposition and pronoun.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
In this handbook, Basher personifies the various aspects of grammar to help readers grasp the basics of the English language. The four chapters cover fundamental elements of grammar, beginning with the parts of speech and increasing in complexity to sentence structure. An icon illustrating the concept accompanies each section. For example, the picture for conjunction shows a strong man (conjunctions are the strong, silent type) with a bridge, illustrating how a conjunction connects two phrases just as a bridge connects two landmasses. Some of the symbolism is easier to grasp than others. Each concept gets its own page with a quick bullet-list description followed by a more thorough introduction. Finally one "Do" and one "Don't" is listed for each concept, as well as some clear examples. Each section is color-coded and a full-size poster puts it all together. Both a table of contents and an index will help readers find specific areas of concern, and a short glossary gives concise definitions to the terms used. This is not designed to replace a complete grammar or style guide, but rather as a quick reference for common grammar questions. The fun design will be appealing to young writers and may help them make sense of some of the tricky rules of the English language. Reviewer: Heather Christensen
Library Media Connection

These compact books are more packed with content than their cartoonish covers imply. Each book is illustrated with brightly colored graphics. The content is directed toward an older, hipper, pre-adolescent reader. Despite their detail-rich content, the writing tone is casual and accessible. These handy books serve as reference books on their respective topics; a teacher would appreciate a set in the ready-reference section of their classroom. They are good books to hand to a student who needs a fresh approach to the topic for clarification.
