Granados: Goyescas; El Pelele

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Manheim
Trio Campanella, a guitar trio based in Denmark, set itself a doubly difficult task with this three-guitar arrangement of the "Goyescas" of Enrique Granados. The "Goyescas" are marvelously evocative works that use piano textures to weave a dense web of musical and programmatic ideas relating to the romantic paintings of Francisco Goya. The arrangements are the work of Trio Campanella guitarist Christophe Dejour, and they must, in the first place, not simply rely on the stock guitar textures of Spanish music, for Granados was very much trying to go beyond these.
Then, the musicians have to realize arrangements that retain a great deal of the composer's pianism. The enterprise succeeds all around. Dejour's arrangements do not compromise Granados' extremely difficult music; he gives all three guitarists a great deal to do, but the contrasts and the ambitious scale of the climactic "El amor y la muerte" Love and Death movement hold up in the trio medium. Most extraordinary is the variety of sounds that come from the trio's guitars. Sample the final minute or two of the first movement, "Los requiebros" Flattery, where the lead guitarist creates a bright, sparkling sound in the major-key melody that strongly suggests the ringing tone of a piano. The guitars execute feathery sounds, sharp percussion, sustained atmospherics, or nearly anything else Granados could come up with. It's a bravura effort, very nicely recorded by Naxos, with very tight ensemble work all the way through. The final El Pelele The Straw Man, another "escena goyesca" makes an effective epilogue. This disc makes an ideal purchase for anyone who has enjoyed the increasingly popular guitar quartet medium and wants to hear just what is possible when arrangement and technical skills come together to exploit the power of the guitar ensemble to its fullest.
Newark Star-Ledger - Bradley Bambarger
The guitar -- in this case, three in perfect blend -- produces an undeniably idiomatic Iberian atmosphere.
