Grand Hotel/Abyss follows the psychological developments of protagonist Vena Cava, who has taken residence within the Grand Hotel, an empty building populated only by the faceless employees within. Seeking to escape the pains brought upon by a lifetime of societal interactions, Vena Cava aims to compartmentalize her existence within the walls of the hotel and attempt a new life of isolation---a life cut off from the possibilities of intimacy and substantial human contact. However, despite the externally dry, austere nature of her new life, Vena Cava remains incapable of escaping the infinitely looping memories of her past life. Wholly unfulfilled by the bleak emptiness of her secluded existence within the hotel, Vena Cava becomes lost within the kaleidoscopic array of emotional memories that repeat endlessly within her mind. She drifts into the hallucinatory realm of the Abyss---a physical manifestation of her psychological reality, serving both as warped analogue and antithesis to her external reality. Within the vibrant and explosive Abyss, the hotel employees are reconstituted as Vespers, a performance group that exudes and embodies the full spectrum of human emotion and experience. The Vespers enchant Vena Cava, slowly seducing her into their ranks to reclaim a direct connection with humanity and feeling. Upon reawakening within her Hotel Room, Vena Cava becomes aware of the subtle but steady onset of a psychological shift within her mind. Her experience in the Abyss has reawakened within her a slowly materializing desire to reestablish an emotional existence. As Vena Cava becomes gradually attuned to this growing change, the fabric of the Grand Hotel begins to erode as the essence of the Abyss quietly infiltrates and builds. An interaction with her old music box marks her first conscious and directed attempt to reconnect with her past. Wandering into the Hotel Courtyard, Vena Cava slowly strengthens her resolve to abandon the Grand Hotel. Vocalizing her now clear awareness of the futility and meaninglessness of life within the Grand Hotel, Vena Cava finds herself swept back into the realm of the Abyss, incarnated now as a seemingly permanent reality rather than a hallucinatory vision. She exhibits a final display of hesitation before pleading for acceptance and immersion into the group of Vespers. Vena Cava moves continually closer to them before finally merging with the group---allowing her body and mind to be embedded into the fabric of the Abyss as she passionately embraces the full range of spiraling emotions and memories within.
