Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - JoAn Watson Martin
The best picture books are attractive to see and lovely to hear, especially being read by a loving grandparent. Some picture books are wonderful, but who is sure what makes them work? The Ontario Arts Council promotes the publication of this photographic book for early readers and all royalties from the sale go to support World Visions who work with children. The photographs show the relationship that exists between grandparents and their grandchildren. The love that is so abundant between generations becomes obvious by the glow on the faces and through the telling jokes and stories that bring on laughter. Grandchildren help work, share a love of animals, play games, and spend quiet, sleepy times together. All ethnicities and customs are represented. Grandchildren recognize how old their grandparents are but also how wise. Each page represents the best of a wide variety of photographers. Reviewer: JoAn Watson Martin
Kirkus Reviews
This celebration of the grandparent-grandchild relationship from the World Vision Easy Readers series shows kids playing, working and laughing with their older relatives. The photos from countries including the Dominican Republic, Afghanistan, Armenia and Tanzania are engaging and contemporary and often show the children's environment, homes and animals, but the names of the countries they live in are hidden away on the verso of the title page, and there is no map. Even most adults sharing this book with children will feel the lack of this information as they try to help kids identify similarities and differences in the everyday experiences of the children pictured or between readers and the children in the book. The very simple text is often trite, providing another reason to skip this well-intentioned but flawed volume. (Picture book. 4-6)
