All Music Guide - Jason Birchmeier
Among the many fine Juan Luis Guerra albums and compilations released over the decades, there's no better starting point than Grandes Éxitos de Juan Luis Guerra 4.40, which compiles a marvelous array of highlights from the Dominican icon's late-'80s and early-'90s rise to fame. Originally issued in 1995, Grandes Éxitos de Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 has been released in a variety of editions over the years. The cover art and track listings vary on some editions, and a few different bonus tracks were added at one time or another. Regardless of these slight variations, all editions stick with the same time frame and feature the same core set of hit singles and fan favorites. ...

Guerra's career began to peak with his fourth album, Ojalá Que Llueva Café (1989). Three songs from that album ("Visa Para un Sueño," "Ojalá Que Llueva Café," "Woman del Callao") are compiled on Grandes Éxitos de Juan Luis Guerra 4.40. Astonishingly, seven of the ten songs from fifth album Bachata Rosa (1990) are compiled here ("Rosalía," "Como Abeja al Panal," "Carta de Amor," "A Pedir Su Mano," "La Bilirrubina," "Burbujas de Amor," "Bachata Rose"). Since all of these songs are great, it's not really a problem except that it leaves precious little space for material from the successive albums Areíto (1992) and Fogaraté (1994), in particular the hit singles "Señales de Humo," "Coronita de Flores," "Mal de Amor," "Viviré," and "El Beso de la Ciguatera," all of which are missing here. Clearly favoring Guerra's breakout albums Ojalá Que Llueva Café and Bachata Rosa, Grandes Éxitos de Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 may not be the most representative compilation, but there's no question that it's filled with fantastic material and makes for an ideal introduction to Guerra's early classics. [The CD was also released with a bonus track, "Señorita."]

    Wow, this is great music!

I'm a sixteen-year-old who has never actually bought a CD before-- music just isn't high on my priority list. Although I really enjoy Spanish, latin music held no particular appeal for me either... until the day I borrowed this CD from my Spanish teacher. WOW! I found myself, completely against my will, toe-tapping, hand-clapping, dancing, and even-- horror of horrors!-- singing along as these most excellent songs coursed through my brain. There is not a bad song on this CD, and knowing Spanish is most definately NOT a requirement for enjoying it. So: go out and buy this CD, even if you don't like music, can't speak Spanish, and have no sense of rhythm. Actually, if you can breathe, buy this CD. No excuse is a good excuse. Just buy it.

    juan luis guerra rocks!

Juan Luis Guerra is unquestionably one of the best Latin singers that has ever existed and exists to this day. His music is contagious and is impossible to listen to sitting down. Being that I belong to the same country he belongs to: Dominican Republic, I can say that his lyrics are truly poetry, and his rhythms is what you can call true Dominican music.

    Great, Upbeat Music!

From the first time I heard a clip of Ojala Que Llueva Cafe (Let's Hope It Rains Coffee), I knew I had to buy this CD. Almost every one of the songs are upbeat (the first thing I look for in a CD) and even the slower songs are great. Even if you know little or no Spanish, you'll find yourself singing along to these songs, having no clue what you are saying. It's really great music, and it's a good change of pace from what you hear every day on the radio. Usted tiene que comprarlo! (You MUST buy it!)

    JLG's Best Album Yet!

I truly enjoyed ''Grandes Exitos'' from the first moment I listened to it. I think the songs are all very catchy, and I definately enjoy listening to them over and over again. I bought this CD only because of one song I had previously heard, (Ojala que Llueva Cafe) and I'm so glad I purchased it, because now I love every single song. ''Grandes Exitos'' includes a variety of music, from beautiful, relaxing romantic songs (Burbujas de Amor), to lively, entertaining & comical songs (Cosquillita) and to songs that seriously reflect the heart of economic problems in the Dominican Republic (Costo de la Vida). G.E. truly has something for everybody. Juan Luis always puts his heart & soul into his music, and that's clearly evident in ''Grandes Exitos.'' I would recommend this CD to anyone and everyone who enjoys ANY kind of music, especially Latin, even if you don't understand the words, because I can I guarantee that the music will still get to you. :)
