    I liked it a lot

I have to disagree with the last review. The typos, if there were any, seem to have been corrected. I didn't see any, and the book is very informative as far as weapons, tectics, etc. There is no other book like it. It spans the entire war, from the perspective of the Germans.

    Grandfather's Tale

Laugh, first, because of the inane characters, the implausibility of the actions, the constant misspellings 'Wermacht, Adolph Hitler...', errors in locations, in facts, in history, in arms and ammos, you'll laugh too at the poor research, and so on and so forth. Then you'll cry when you realize you've spent so much money on this piece of crapola.

    Grandfather's Tale

This is the paper equivalent of a WWII First-Person shooter on the Xbox--Call of Duty comes to mind. There's no denying that it's fast-paced and energetic one must admit the author can drive this thing, his talent lies there. But otherwise it's full of incoherent cardboard characters, massively repetitive actions, factual and historical errors, plus an unusual large amount of misprints and typos. This vanity press book is downright terrible and the author otherwise limited talent doesn't go as far as being able to spell Adolf Hitler's name correctly, for example. If you love video games, this book is for you. At the easiest level, you just sit there in your trench and shoot zillions of soldiers in each mission, plus you pick up better weapons (which you master almost instantaneously) as you go along and have an otherwise unlimited access to ammunitions.

    Great Soldier/Sniper Book

I have to disagree with the previous review. I've read this book three times, and there is no misspelling of Adolf Hitler. There are a couple of typos, but nothing to the degree he complains about. The story begins in the present day USA, where an elderly grandfather tells his tale (the story then goes back in time, to 1938: before the Axis conquest of Poland) of how he was conscripted into the German Army, and participated in many battles. These included the invasions of Poland, Western Europe, the Soviet Union, Crete, and the defense of Italy, France and Germany. The final Battle of Berlin is awesome, and very realistic.

A great book, well worth reading

I thought this book was awesome. It basically allows you to experience the blitzkrieg first hand, riding through the Soviet Union in a canvas-covered, German army truck as the panzers and hordes of German infantry destroy Russian army after army. It's an amazing, life-changing book that will show you war like no other book can.

One of the greatest books of all time

Grandfather's Tale is unique in many ways. First of all, it is the story of a German soldier, who is unwillingly forced to join the German Army just months before the outbreak of WW2. Georg, the main character, begins as a humble baker. The book progresses through one battle after another, starting with the invasion of Poland. Georg quickly begins to stand out among his fellow soldiers as he kills scores of enemy soldiers with well placed, long range rifle shots. He supresses enemy machinegun nests, he shoots officers, artillery spotters, and enemy snipers. As he moves up through the ranks, and fights in more and more battles, he becomes a hardened killer. Eventually, he is involved in the Invasion of the Soviet Union and finally the last desperate defense of Berlin, the final stand.

    Loved it / Hated it

Hi I agree with all of you in a way. This was an exciting book, where the hero manages to live. Like many others said, it is really stuffed with mistakes. When I purchased the book, I didn't notice that it was a novel, so I was initially disappointed. In a way, this is a book that a friend's Grandfather should have written. He moved to America in prior to 1917 because he ended up serving in WWI. He went back to Germany to get his brothers in about 1937-8, and since he was still technically a German Citizen, he got drafted. He served on the Russian Front, made Sergeant-Major, and was in Normandy for the Invasion. He of course surrendered EARLY. According to family legend he waited until the first groups of troops went past, and got out of a fox hole with his hands in the air screaming I'm an American, my old serial number is whatever, get me the #$(#*& home. Excellent world war two book

This is the only book I have yet encountered which depicts the Polish army (correctly) not as a bunch of cavalry-heavy fools, but as a compitent army. In the book, the Germans encounter Polish soldiers with heavy machineguns, artillery, and anti-tank weapons. Even Polish armor is mentioned. Russian tactics of throwing men at the front like fodder is also correctly depicted. The tactics are right down to the letter. I am impressed, and you will be too.

A walk through world war two as a German Soldier

I liked this book a lot. After reading perhaps twenty war books I found this one to be the most entertaining. There is never a dull moment, and I would bet that it has more gun fights and battles than any other book.

An exciting story with never a dull moment

Tale of a German Sniper is about a soldier who lives through dozens of battles during WW2. During the six years of the war, he changes from a novice soldier to a master sniper and killer. The change is very gradual and believable. I highly recommend it.

    The Worst book ever written

Oh my, where to start. This must be the worst book ever written. Numerous mistakes in dates, spelling, historical facts are abundant. The hero, a German super-sniper displays skills so unbelievable as to defy logic. Poorly written and poorly researched.

    A superb story

The Bump must not have read the book I did. I found it very entertaining. After hearing the US perspective over and over, Grandfather's Tale makes WW2 sound like a whole new war.

A not so accurate sniper book

I bought it thinking it was non-fiction, My mistake. Book has good plot, but wording is awakward, and lots of facts are incorrect. Anyone who has done any long range shooting for real will find it hard to believe and unrealistic

    Very exciting and well written

This book is hard to put down after you get to chapter four or so. It's very climactic right up to the end, which is very good. I'll probably read it a second time.

    A great piece of literature

Reading this book is like living the war as a German soldier did. The book is filled with excitement, as well as sad parts. I highly recommend it.

If you want to read what it was like for the Germans during the war, this is an excellent choice. It is very well written and entertaining.

The other side of the coin

This book made me realize that the Germans went through a lot during WWII. The author makes a bold aproach by actually painting the Germans as human, something which I have never seen done before. Enlightening, and with an extremely good plot.
