Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The natural change of day into night is given a mystical treatment in this board book. Twilight is that time when the sky reflects the last soft rays of the sun and the surrounded woods and land becomes darker and indistinct. It is Grandfather Twilight who takes a pearl from his treasure chest and as it grows in size, he releases it in the sky where it becomes the moon. His job done, Grandfather Twilight retires for the night, just like little ones should. The allegory may be well beyond the comprehension of the intended listeners, but the soft illustrations and calm, short text will make a soothing read. 2000, Philomel,
Children's Literature
One of the most calming nighttime books I ever read with my children makes a new appearance as a board book. Grandfather Twilight is an allegorical story of a grandfather who, nightly, takes one pearl from an everlasting strand and then goes for a walk. Everything quiets around him and the pearl growing larger with each step until he gently gives it "to the silence above the sea." There is tranquility in both Berger's verse and the soft mystical illustrations that make this a lullaby of a book. 2000, Philomel, Ages 1 to 4, $6.99. Reviewer: Susie Wilde

    Highly Highly recommend!

This is simply the finest 'going to sleep' book I have found. I've read hundreds of books to small children and have purchased every Barbara Berger book available to read to my own son. The stories are magical and the illustrations captivate my child within. Get it for your toddler. It's a bargain. You'll want to read it as much as your child will want it read to them.

    Beautiful book!

This book still makes me misty-eyed. I read to my children when they were young and now I'm thrilled to share it with my grandson. It is...wonderful!

    5 stars not enough!

Everything about this gem is magical. And magic is where young children live. I never tired of reading this book to my son. He will no doubt read it to his children. It is a true classic.

Beatiful, Creative, Peaceful, Magical! We love it!

The artwork is beautiful and creative. The text is soothing. Grandfather Twilight has been one of our favorite bedtime stories for each of our 4 children. Reading through this story with your children nestled close to you brings such a peaceful feeling into the room, that it actually makes bedtime easier - really.

    Moon Dreems

This story is about a man who has 2 animals. The man goes to the chest once a day and grabs 1 pearle. When he leaves his house and makes a step the pearle grows bigger. When he is in the ocean the pearle is so big that when he lets it go it is the moon. When he see that the pearle is in the sky he goes back to sleep. I recomend this book because you can learn whats the moon in this book. I also like this book because Indide the man's house its painted like nature. The pictures help me because their were 3 in a row and in each picture the pearle grows bigger. I Hope You Read This Book.

    Calming book for evening storytelling

The first time I read this book was when my eleven year old son was one and I fell in love. When a parent loves a book, it is imparted in the reading and this book became my favorite book to read. It is a soothing, quiet story that explains how night comes into the world. The enlargement of the pearl as it becomes the moon always made my son's eyes grow as big as moonpies...a wonderous book and one that makes you wish someone were tucking you into bed at night.
