Overview

Upbeat, funny and irresistibly singable, this song was made famous by John Denver and now made doubly delightful by Christopher Canyon's illustrations. Especially if you listen along with Denver, kids will say, play it again! It is all about the cousins, the chicken pie, four hound dogs and a piggy, but as the song says, the best darn thing about Grandmas house was her great big feather bed. The EPUB-format version comes with John Denver's famous voice accompanying the illustrations. Vince Gill put it in a nutshell: "It just makes sense--John Denver and kids!"

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Hynes-Berry
In a tribute to the singer, Christopher Canyon has somewhat modified a Jim Connor's song that John Denver made famous. He also has provided eye-popping illustrations—literally the eight kids, four hound dogs, and the piggy we stole from the shed plus grandma and grandpa are pictured with pop-eyes as they tumble around the big bed. Other illustrations also have fun with the country roads traditions. One spread shows two adults and a child posed as a parody of Grant Woods' American Gothic. A one page afterword tells the story of how John Denver saw this lively song as a fitting way to celebrate the power of music and family. The hardcover edition includes a CD of Denver singing the song. This is the fourth in the "John Denver and Kids" series issued in the "Sharing Nature with Children" series. Meet the Author

John Denver knew that the most wonderful things in life are simple and free. Things like sunshine and friendship. He shared his feelings in poetry and song-and with his remarkably expressive voice, millions of people responded. "People everywhere are the same in heart and spirit," he said. "No matter what language we speak, what color we are, the form of our politics or the expression of our love and our faith, music proves it: we are the same." Over 32 million John Denver albums have sold in the United States alone, making him one of the top selling vocal artists of all time. He was a director and supporter of
over 22 environmental organizations including the Windstar Foundation, the Hunger Project, the National Wildlife Federation, Save The Children, the Cousteau Society, Friends of the Earth, and the Human/Dolphin Foundation.; Christopher Canyon spent much of his childhood growing up in rural Ohio where he spent most of his time drawing, laying guitar and singing songs with his family. In his youth, Christopher was deeply influenced by the music of John Denver. "John's songs gave me hope, joy, and an unbounded belief in possibilities," he says.Christopher is an award-winning artist,
musician and performer dedicated to sharing the joy and importance of the arts with children, educators and families. He frequently visits schools, providing entertaining and educational programs, and is a popular speaker at conferences throughout the country. "Everyone has what it takes to be artistic, and it's not talent. It is our creativity," he says. "As humans we are all creative beings and our individual creativity is one of our most powerful gifts. If we celebrate and use our creativity in positive ways it is amazing how much we can learn, how much we can discover and how much joy we can share."

It was so cool to find this book. My nephew is 10 years old and had the opportunity to meet Christopher Canyon at his school. He was enamored with his books illustrations. Since I have been a John Denver fan all of my life, I too wanted to see this song in action. While visiting my grandsons in Memphis, I took them to Barnes and Noble to read and look at books. A favorite pass time for all of us. I found this book on the shelf and knelt to sing it to my grandsons. Even though I can't sing a lick, they loved it. After the first rendition from Grandmommy, they wanted me to sing it again. Two more children joined in the story. Grey and Noah read it two more times before we left the store. Noah is 4 years old and called me in Florida two days later to sing the entire song from the book. The only difference in his rendition and mine is, he says Grandma's Flower Bed. Great, great book for any age kid - even myself.
