Overview

A scrapbook of memorabilia chronicles the tender and sometimes zany moments shared between Grandma and her granddaughter during their seaside summers. Pages of the lively scrapbook are interspersed with watercolor-rendered photographs of the girl, now a teenager, as she reminisces about their relationship. The last summer in the scrapbook reveals how their roles have changed. Now the girl guides Grandma's wheelchair to places Grandma once brought her on the back of her bike or in a stroller. This poignant story uplifts and dignifies the experience of aging and loss, tingeing it not with sadness, but with hope and wonder.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The love of a grandparent is a wonderful gift. In this heartfelt memoir, a young girl is able to experience the love of her grandmother through the memories carefully and gently tucked away in her grandmother's scrapbook. Filled with photographs, locks of hair, pressed flowers from strolls through the gardens, and shells collected at the seashore, the scrapbook reflects the grandmother's deep love for her granddaughter. Like the little girl, the scrapbook grew over the years, with each of the special moments they shared carefully tucked between the pages. The narrative alone is so beautifully descriptive that the reader can almost taste the salt spray from the ocean or feel the grandmother's arms wrapped around her limp, sleepy body as they watch the stars from the dock of the bay. When you combine that with the expressive, colorful illustrations by Maureen Hyde, you have a real winner of a book. In a time when the emphasis is not always about family and grandparents aren't always close by, this book is especially important for keeping young children connected to their distant loved ones. Parents and children alike will find comfort in a book like this. 2000 (orig. 1990), The Gingerbread House/Simon & Schuster, and $8.50. Ages 6 to 11. Reviewer: Emily Cook

As a Creative Memories Consultant and as an avid scrapbooker, this book is a reminder to why we preserve our memories now. When we are gone, who will tell our stories? By scrapbooking, our precious memories will survive longer than we will. In this book the narrator has her Grandma's memories through the scrapbook they put together in summers past. Read with a box of tissues nearby.
