Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
A family is a group of people who care about you. A family is made of different people and can include the parents. This title in the Acorn early readers "Families" series goes on to describe the parents and that "Parents have parents, too! They are called grandparents." The simple text is accompanied by colorful pictures that show a variety of different family possibilities, with some having many grandparents (especially blended families), some with only one or two, and some without any. We are shown grandparents in a wide sampling of ethnicities and a variety of settings, both indoors and outside. The pictures include grandparents who live far away (communicating via telephone) and grandparents who live with their entire families. Families are shown visiting grandparents and grandparents helping grandchildren. The question on the last page promises to create reactions for a great discussion: "Do you have grandparents?" As with the other titles in the series, there is a table of contents, a brief "picture glossary," a brief index, and notes to parents and teachers with ideas for before and after reading strategies to make the book more meaningful. Fine for preschool read aloud or older, challenged readers. Rated level H with 145 words, this series also includes: Aunts and Uncles, Parents, Cousins, Foster Parents, Brothers and Sisters, and Role Models. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan
