Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“Sensitively written and beautifully drawn.”
Bookseller
Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
Using experiences with a sailboat as a focal point, a child tells of grandpa's life, illness, and death. Grandpa loved his sailboat, The Periwinkle, but he loved grandma more. Periwinkle shells reminded grandpa of grandma's dimples. Every year they would wash and paint the boat: a blue stripe for the sky, white like clouds, and chestnut like grandma's hair. Before grandpa became ill, the child rode on the sailboat as a baby, held by his mother. When grandpa was in bed, he said they would have another trip when he got up, but he never got up. The boy and grandma sometimes sit and stare at the boat, which is in disrepair. Finally, the boy's father gets the sailboat back in shape. Mother, father, grandma, and the boy sail on it. "And as we raced along, I dreamt that Grandpa was standing by the wheel giving us all a ride just like he'd said—and he didn't look tired or ill any more." The colored illustrations evince the spirit of the sea and sailing. Hair color in the pictures helps identify the various people in the text. The ending shows the sailboat and its occupants silhouetted against a sunset. The child's reminiscence of his grandpa is both touching and upbeat. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
