Overview

Grant's Atlas of Anatomy continues its tradition of fine artwork based on meticulous observation of the human body. The Eleventh Edition preserves the breadth and variety of anatomical images on which students and faculty have come to rely, including the exquisite full-color illustrations drawn from actual dissections, schematic drawings, surface anatomy photographs, overview tables, and diagnostic images that help students correlate anatomy knowledge with clinical practice. The book is organized by body region, and chapters present anatomy in dissection sequences providing you a clear, accurate roadmap as you proceed through anatomy lab.

"...features regional organization presented in a sequence based on how the reader would perform an actual laboratory dissection...with new muscle tables, larger reproductions, increased coverage of neuroanatomy, and chapter subtitles." Appropriate for: Medical Students, Allied Health Students.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Loretta L. White , DNS (Indiana State University)
Description: Grant's Anatomy offers an exquisite and comprehensive depiction of the human body. Last published in 1999, this newest edition features drawings that provide unique visual dissections of body structures for the discerning student of anatomy.
Purpose: The authors state that their purpose is to provide an updated version of this book while preserving the integrity and strength of previous editions. The authors fully meet and exceed their objectives in this fine reference. Students of anatomy will readily recognize the value of this book with its complete, thorough, and clear depictions of the human body.
Audience: Although written for medical students and faculty, this book has widespread applications. Grant's Anatomy could easily serve as a comprehensive, "must have" reference for anyone who is studying or practicing in a healthcare field. The authors' academic credentials attest to their ability to write such a book as this and illustrate the extraordinary credibility they bring to this work.
Features: All body structures are described in narrative and pictorial forms. In a unique approach, the authors use illustrations that depict sequential dissections of body parts allowing for an "outside to inside" perspective much as if a student were actually in the dissecting room. The inclusion of many actual body scans and x-rays enhance understanding of the content. A minor but potentially useful change would be to arrange the content in a "head to toe" format because that is the typical order healthcare professionals review and assess the human body.
Assessment: I have taught basic anatomy and physiology to nursing students for many years and know the value a clear and concise reference has for new learners — especially for such a technical and involved subject. I have always used Hole's Human Anatomy & Physiology, 10th edition (McGraw-Hill, 2003) as a primary text, but Grant's Anatomy would serve as a wonderful supplement.

Great update to a classic text

Grant's Atlas of Anatomy has long been touted as more realistic drawing compared to other leading texts. This new edition is wonderfully organized with a tabbed edge that speeds up finding the area you are interested in studying. I mainly used Netter during my first two years of medical school. For that level of learning it was excellent. The drawings were very good for an initial learning of anatomy. In the 3rd and 4th year's of medical school, I found that I need more views and some of the anatomy I had to study for ENT and Surgery simply wasn't well done in Netter. The New Grant's was a welcome resource that had the details I needed to learn. The accompanying CD was also wonderful. On away rotations I just took the CD with me and was able to review the anatomy without having the heavier text with me. I believe that this text should be added to your library as your needs in medicine increase.

    Disappointing atlas...

I used the previous edition in a Gross Anatomy class in the past and I am just as disappointed with this edition as I was the last. There are few changes between editions. The pictures rarely show what you actually search for in the Gross Anatomy laboratory. Many images serve only to confuse me and force me to use another source to locate the structure in question. It's dissappointing that so many medical schools are requiring this atlas (mine included) and seem to 'rave' about how wonderful it is. I disagree and I would caution most students before they purchase it.
