Not bad just not my style

This was my first foray into World War 1 fiction and I selected the book because its Title and reputation as a respectable classic is legendary.

Overall it was an engaging book and I thought the author's battle descriptions (the shelling) where captivating and shocking. I can say that I could visualize being among the characters experiencing the events as they were written.

The story follows 1 American nicknamed Kentucky and 3 Englishmen whose company is being moved to the war's front lines. It's their first real engagement and the 4 agree to watch each other's backs (you can see where this is going). The book then follows their situations to a heart-felt, remorseful conclusion.

My big snub on this book is that the events of the 4 people are very unbalanced. In fact 2 of them are forgotten early in the story while the other 2 are followed through the entire journey. You find out what happened to each of them at the end over a couple short sentences. The result for me was disappointment that more of their situations were not elaborated in the story's body.
