Meet the Author

Creator of the modern detective story, innovative architect of the horror genre, and a poet of extraordinary musicality, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) remains one of America’s most popular and influential writers. His books of collected tales and poems brim with psychological depth, almost painful intensity, and unexpected — and surprisingly modern — flashes of dark humor and irony.

Many folk tales and horror stories involve magic or magical objects. In this story, the magical object, or talisman, is a monkey's paw that gives unusual powers to anyone who owns it. In many parts of the world, certain objects-especially those associated woth animals-are belived to have special powers. In Western culture, for example, a rabbit's foot was once beleived to bring luck, and luck horseshoes still hang on the doors of many barns and farmhouses.
