Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
This 13th volume of the Graphic Classics series highlights the work of Rafael Sabatini, a popular writer in the early 20th century who is now almost completely forgotten. Sabatini is best known for the creation of the gentleman-pirate Captain Blood, but he wrote in a number of genres, including mystery, historical fiction and the occult. His work reminds me somewhat of Arthur Conan Doyle, who also penned a number of supernatural tales. The best tale in this volume features the origin of Captain Blood, a doctor turned swashbuckler. Other memorable stories include "A Plague of Ghosts," about a reformed villain who investigates a haunted house; "The Risen Dead," about the botched hanging of a rogue for a crime he didn't commit; and "The Fool's Love Story," the tragic tale of a lovesick jester. There are some who credit Sabatini with the introduction of the antihero to pop culture; indeed, many of his main characters are rogues. Graphic Classics is a fine series, and Rafael Sabatini is no exception; readers unfamiliar with Sabatini's work are in for a treat. Contributors to this volume include Roger Langridge, Carlo Vargara, Rod Lott and Rich Tommaso, who will be familiar to followers of this series. Graphic Classics: Rafael Sabatini contains comic book violence and is recommended for all collections, especially if your patrons like historical adventure and tales of the occult. KLIATT Codes: JSA—Recommended for junior and senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2006, Eureka Productions, 144p. illus., Ages 12 to adult.

VOYA
Not many teens today are likely to be familiar with Rafael Sabatini, but luckily this Graphic Classics installment includes a mini-bio piece titled Desperately Seeking Sabatini. The most familiar story in this collection is Captain Blood. Unfortunately the abridgement of this rollicking tale only lays down the groundwork for his adventures and does not visually offer anything more than the Errol Flynn movie, which at least has the benefit of . . . well, Errol Flynn. That said, each story has its own charm, and Sabatini's flare for drama and romance comes through. The artwork, provided by various artists, captures the mood of each piece, from the classical look of Captain Blood and The Plague of Ghosts, to the noir feel of The Valet Mystery, the straightforward cartoon drawings in The Dream and The Spiritualist, and the frenetic caricatures in The Fool's Love Story and The Risen Dead. In the end, despite the attention to detail and clever adaptations by writers and artists, the teen appeal is minimal. It may have some value as a lead-in to Sabatini's books. Reluctant readers and insatiable graphic novel fans may also be tempted by it.
