About the Author

Jason Bige Burnett graduated from Western Kentucky University with a BFA in ceramics and BAs in both printmaking and graphic design. He then continued his education for two years at the renowned Penland School of Crafts as a core fellowship student and spent a year as an Artist-In-Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN. He has taught many ceramic surface design workshops at various locations including Baltimore Clayworks, MudFire, Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts, and Santa Fe Clay. His ceramics have been exhibited nationally, and hes been featured in publications such as Pottery Making Illustrated, Ceramics Monthly (Emerging Artist in 2013), American Craft Magazine, and regional magazines such as Carolina Home + Garden and WNC Magazine, in addition to being featured in the book 500 Prints on Clay (Lark Books). Jason currently lives and works as a full-time studio artist in Bakersville, NC.

This guide focuses entirely on the surfaces of clay objects. Artist Burnett considers ceramic vessels, plates, sculpture, and other objects simply as drawing and painting surfaces. The first section covers methods for mark making that are specific to clay, such as slip and staining, as well as more general techniques that also work well on ceramic objects, such as stenciling and decals. The remainder of the guide deals with various principles of printing on clay, including screen printing and image transfer. Step-by-step projects demonstrate each method. The book is richly illustrated with works by contemporary ceramics artists. VERDICT Intermediate and experienced artists with some existing ceramics skills can find much inspiration here.
