Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Stacy Holbrook
Budgets are in decline, support is dwindling, and cutbacks are a constant fear. This seems to be the reality for many public libraries, with their futures dependent upon the support of the public and of the government. In these times of economic distress, strong library advocacy is a necessity. Grassroots Library Advocacy is an ALA special report in which the authors share their experiences with a recent campaign to save New York City public libraries. They share ready-to-use strategies and ideas to help public libraries get started in creating a library advocacy program with the goal of helping libraries become more visible in the public eye. The appendix provides examples of these ideas, including marketing materials, media and elected official contact trackers, an interview cheat sheet, and an example of a press release. There is also a "Rally in Box;" a tool to empower anyone to hold a library rally. These materials are also found in an editable version on the ALA editions web extras website. Written in an informal, conversational manner, it is easy to identify with the authors' plight over the New York City budget cuts, and easy to feel their courage and strength in dealing with naysayers and "nut jobs." The four short chapters are quick to read and focus on the practical, instead of the theoretical, which will motivate readers to create an advocacy plan. Though the strategies discussed in this special report are primarily geared toward public libraries, school libraries may also find advocacy inspiration among its pages. Consider this title a must-read for any library facing budget cuts. As the authors explain, "We will not be shushed!" Reviewer: Stacy Holbrook
