Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
Kilpatrick and Roche offer readers a peek into how graven images can affect a life and also into how the images themselves may be created. In each short story, objects ranging from the ethereal to the mundane possess mystical qualities and give something to the protagonist that can be beneficial or hurtful. In Robert Silverberg's "Diana of the Hundred Breasts," Charlie's belief system is shattered when he actually sees the goddess Diana after excavating a sealed chamber. After participating in a con game in which she pretends to be a spirit from the afterlife, a medieval woman, trapped in a wall, escapes in "Heart of Stone" by Lawrence Watt-Evans. In "Ascension," by Yvonne Navarro, a Mexican girl, long dead, becomes a revered statue after avenging the family of her murderer. A starving boy's good intentions cause his siblings to become trapped in a glass heart in "Shaped Stone," by Nina Kiriki Hoffman. In M. Christian's "Wanderlust," a cheap plastic hula girl claims the man on whose dashboard she dances. Including tales by such notable authors as Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Kathe Koja, Storm Constantine, Tanith Lee, and Gene Wolfe, this collection of short stories will appeal to readers of SF and fantasy as well as to readers of world myths. Although the collection contains a few previously published stories, most of the titles here are new. Contributors' notes follow the tales. Recommended for older teens and mythology fans. KLIATT Codes: SA—Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2000, Berkley/Ace, 249p, 23cm, $13.00. Ages 16 to adult. Reviewer: Ginger Armstrong; Principal Lib. VOYA
Such luminaries as Robert Silverberg, Tanith Lee, Esther Friesner, and Nina Kiriki Hoffman are included in this collection of stories about magic and myth. Characters range from vengeful goddesses and manticores to gargoyles and ghosts. Many of these mythical beasts wear a thin disguise of normalcy as they walk through the streets of the average American, Italian, or Turkish town. There is not a lot of high adventure included in these stories, but the collection does what any short story collection should do: It compels the reader to see what the next author has to say. Particularly notable is Hoffman's Shaped Stones. Depression era New York City becomes the setting of a twisted fairy tale, as a psychically gifted boy accepts a wealthy stranger's offer of apprenticeship in exchange for food and shelter for his siblings. Another story that leaves a disturbing aftertaste is That Glisters Is by Tanith Lee, in which a man is haunted his whole life by a golden face from an alternate universe. These quiet and mysterious stories will find an audience with teens and adults who are interested in folklore and mythology but are not necessarily looking for high adventure. Although the quality of the stories is uneven, readers will find some gems in this collection.
