Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
While several volumes of Wilson's shorter poems have been published, his life-long series makes its first appearance in book form since 1972, reprinting the earlier volumes and seeming to draw the sequence to a close. Begun when the poet was a naval officer during the Korean War, the poem explores the effects of war and bears comparison to Ezra Pound's Cantos or Charles Olson's Maximus . On the prefatory page, he defines ``Graves Registry'' as ``A Joint Service Operation that comes/ in after battles, & wars, to count/ the dead, identify bones, draw up/ a total of what has been lost.'' Images of sea and death uniquely juxtapose. Over and over, Wilson grapples with a life in which: ``I love you is a whisper spoken/ between battles to a woman of our own race.'' Unfortunately, the further he gets from his own wartime experiences, the more he's wrestling with ghosts. Losing their specificity and immediacy, the words lose much of their intensity.
