Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of "A True Book" series, Mullins provides one of the clearest and most dynamic explanations of gravity I have seen. While every reader has experienced gravity, understanding it is abstract and the history of our comprehension even more tangled. But Mullins provides a solid history that includes Newton and Einstein. His sentences are direct without being pedantic. For example, after a longer explanation of matter, mass, and weight he summarized: "Matter is stuff. Mass is the amount of stuff. Weight is how much the earth's gravity pulls on stuff." He also includes a brief description of life without gravity and the difficulties astronauts face while they are weightless in the space station. As is true with all the books in this series, Mullins starts with a single question quiz, saying everything you read in this book is true except for one of sentences on the first page. This hook works well to draw the reader in, looking for the answer. Illustrated with attractive photos, the book will work well in early and middle grades. Back matter includes a glossary, index, and list of further resources. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
