Any successful travel writer must come to terms with tourism, or his writing will suffer. Olsen (English, Concordia Coll.) has not done so-he uses the word tourist mostly as an epithet, as if said through clenched teeth-so perhaps he has no desire to become a travel writer. Yet all of us travelers are tourists, not least a man who admits to eating at McDonald's as often as Olsen does. Aside from his hang-up with folks and their cameras, Olsen often overwrites, trying to foist meaning on objects without any and conclusions where none are needed. Too much here is "sacred," too many things "spiritual." He quotes Thoreau but doesn't take his advice-simplify, simplify. The beauty should reveal itself, and there is indeed some beauty here. The best writing comes when Olsen is close to home. He dresses up the otherwise bleak Minnesota, North Dakota, and southern Canadian plains nicely-he knows the land, and it shows. These literary travel essays are recommended for academic libraries and public libraries with large travel collections.-Travis McDade, Ohio State Univ.
