Gravity Won't Get You High [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Teetering somewhere between brash garage rock and sunny indie pop, the Grates' full-length debut Gravity Won't Get You High builds on the sound they introduced on Ouch. The Touch EP. Much like Be Your Own Pet, the Grates have absorbed all the bright, loud, immediate moments from the White Stripes and especially Yeah Yeah Yeahs, adding their own lighthearted, almost cartoonish twist: "Seek Me," "19 20 20," and the cheeky-sexy "Trampoline" sound like Karen O could've sung them in grade school. A lot of Gravity Won't Get You High's songs feel like foul-mouthed, sing-songy nursery rhymes, and when the Grates are at their best, their mischief is addictive. When Patience ...

A lot of Gravity Won't Get You High's songs feel like foul-mouthed, sing-songy nursery rhymes, and when the Grates are at their best, their mischief is addictive. When Patience Hodgson sings "I'm gonna go like this to you/Lalala!" on "Lies are Much More Fun," you can practically see her waggling her tongue and making funny faces, while "Rock Boys" and "Science Is Golden" boast guitars that sound like blazing beams of sunlight. However, as fun as Gravity Won't Get You High can be, it has enough repetitive tracks and clunkers including the, well, grating opening track "I Won't Survive" and the cryptic closing ballad "I Am Siam," neither of which plays to the band's strengths to make the album more of a promising debut than one that actually delivers.

    But The Grates will

Don't believe the hype. I don't know why this band continues to get compared to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Be Your Own Pet (two bands whom I love to bits with a similar sound -to each other-). Are there no other female fronted rock bands out there that they are the only reference? You don't have to howl like Jemina and Karen O to be punk. They don't sound like either and that is in no way a bad thing. Simply put, The Grates are awesome. It's hard to put my finger on a specific band but they remind me of the sound of the early 90's when a bunch of girly-ish rock bands were getting noticed (i.e. Letters to Cleo, Belly, Juliana Hatfield, that whole era). It's the kind of music that makes you want to jump around and dance and sing at the top of your lungs. You just can't not enjoy lyrics like "Some mother****ers think they're born to dance / some mother****ers think they're born to... dance / Well maybe you is boy / and, maybe you just is" ("Inside Outside")

The editorial review is correct about the opening and ending tracks. They are very different from the power-pop rock feel of the rest of the album. The opening track almost made me not want to hear the rest of the CD with its high pitched old-timey type warbling (good thing it¿s barely a minute long). Fear not, it gets better and the last track is nowhere near as weird or uncomfortable as the first. Only four stars because as much as I love the majority of the album, it all starts to sound the same after a while.

Highlights: "Sukkafish" (a country tinged tune that makes you want to clap along), "Inside Outside", "19-20-20", "Trampoline", "Nothing Sir"
