Overview

Understanding anatomical structures is one thing. Knowing how to dissect them is another. More effectively than any other resource, this user-friendly manual demonstrates how to successfully dissect the trunk, head and neck, pelvis and perineum, and upper and lower extremities. Extensively class tested and reviewed, it is proven to reduce the time you spend in dissection...without skimping on the details that you need to know!

• Page references to Drake et al.: Gray's Anatomy for Students, Netter: Atlas of Human Anatomy, 4th Edition, and Moses et al.: Atlas of Clinical Gross Anatomy point you towards outstanding visual guidance on anatomical structure and function.

• STUDENT CONSULT access lets you browse through the complete contents of the book online...review cadaver dissection photographs before going into the lab...test your knowledge with review questions and answers...and follow "integration links" to related bonus material from Gray's Anatomy for Students, Atlas of Clinical Gross Anatomy, and other books.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: John K. Hubbard, PhD, PT (Texas A&M University Health Science Center)
Description: This book systematically and thoroughly guides medical, dental, and healthcare profession students in their practical understanding of the human body through dissection. The book was originally was published in 2004.
Purpose: The primary purpose was to produce a guide for efficient dissection of the entire human body within the time frame allocated to human gross anatomy courses. The second purpose was to provide students with clear expectations of the anatomic structures to be dissected and learned. Although there are many dissection guides, this one is the first to correlate and consolidate the information and images from the most popular anatomy texts and atlases into one concise format. From this perspective, the authors meet their objectives.
Audience: This book is written primarily for students in their first year human anatomy dissection course. It will also serve as a ready and rapid reminder of anatomical structures in later years when studying for board exams and residency training. While entirely adequate for medical and health professions students, the book does not have enough in-depth dissections of the facial, oral, and maxillary regions to be of use in a detailed dental anatomy dissection course. The authors have extensive experience in teaching human anatomy to these student groups.
Features: The book takes a regional approach, guiding students through dissection techniques sufficient to explore and learn the intricate details of the human body. Multiple illustrations accompany each set of directions, to assist in guiding students though their labs. The book lays open nicely on standard dissection table book stands, minimizing page turning. The only shortcomings of this book are in the construction. The pages are perforated for removal, but they will easily become separated from the book during exposure to moisture and greasy gloves during the dissection experience. Thicker or laminated pages would resolve this problem. Additionally, the nerves in the drawings of the muscles are difficult to see in many of the images, requiring moving of the book to better lighting angles.
Assessment: This is the type of book I have thought many times of writing myself. I would prefer bolder drawings, but the original drawings are available in the referenced texts as well as on the Student Consult web site. This is the best published dissector I have seen to this point in my career, and we are considering replacing our home written dissector with this one.
