Overview

No one expected the stage production of this in-your-face homage to high school, high hairdos, and hamburgers to succeed. Least of all Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, the two out-of-work actors who wrote it. But the Broadway production of GREASE ran for more than eight years, a record for its time. GREASE also spawned the wildly popular 1978 film, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, which begot one of the largest-selling soundtracks of all time. The peppy and effervescent score did not survive the transition to screen intact, but "Summer Nights," "Beauty School Dropout," and "Freddy My Love" still have charm to spare. These originals have been augmented by fool-proof commercial fare like John Farrar's "You're the One That I Want" and "Hopelessly Devoted to You," as well as the Barry Gibb-penned title song, sung by Frankie Valli, -- all of which became monster singles. The soundtrack is padded with some golden oldies performed by Sha-Na-Na, but GREASE is still the word when it comes to slumber parties, drag races, and prom night.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Grease was a huge success as a Broadway musical prior to hitting the big screen in 1978. That was the version that transformed Grease into a phenomenon -- it was a runaway box office success, and then became a TV, cable, and video favorite. The soundtrack rivaled its film counterpart as a pop culture perennial, and it's not hard to see why -- its good-natured pastiche of doo wop and early rock & roll is infectious and charming, due in no small part to John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John's charismatic, engaging performances. They sing the majority of the originals -- "Summer Nights," "Hopelessly Devoted to You," "You're the One That I Want," "Sandy," "Greased Lightnin'" -- which were the reason why the film and soundtrack became blockbusters. The fact that the originals hold up better than the '50s tunes is largely due to Sha Na Na's workmanlike performances, but the originals are so giddily enjoyable -- not only the quintet mentioned above, but also Frankie Avalon's "Beauty School Dropout," Stockard Channing's "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee," and Frankie Valli's title track -- that everything works. Some listeners may prefer the Broadway cast recording, but the fact of the matter is, the sleek pop production the movie's soundtrack boasts and the cast's enthusiastic performances go a long way in making this Grease the definitive Grease.

The film takes an already overrated "Grease" and ruins it. I cannot see merrit in this recording. The film version revamps the story, adding and deleting charcters, scenes, and songs. Further more, John Travolta cannot sing! Olivia Newton John and the rest of the cast are TOLERABLE but sound like they thried to make there voices too immature and "high school-ish". If you really enjoy "Grease" I would recommened the "New Broadway Cast Recording" with Rosie O'Donnell. It is amazing the people acutally CAN SING and sound like they're HAVING FUN!!!

If you're a lover of musicals, you'll never get enough of this. The soundtrack to the acclaimed musical film Grease is incredible. The music is done by the original cast including John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Who doesn't love them?! I give it five stars because it keeps you wanting to sing along the whole time you're hearing it. It's definitly worth the money because it's a classic that no one can never get enough of!
