All Music Guide - Sarah Erlewine
Grease is one of the classic musicals that the majority of the public associates with the movie incarnation, although there are plenty of stage versions that are just as well-done, if not better. The stage musical often has different songs than the movie adaptation and different plot twists. Grease opened originally in 1972, starring Carole Demas and Barry Bostwick of Rocky Horror Picture Show fame. Sandy Dumbrowski or Sandra D. and Danny Zuko have a summer romance; however, when they run into each other at school, they find they are socially incompatible. She attempts to change herself to suit him, he changes himself to suit her, but finally her alteration works and everybody's happy. Grease has famous songs like "Greased Lightnin'," "It's Raining on Prom Night," and "We Go Together" -- although the most famous songs from the movie "Hopelessly Devoted to You," "Summer Nights" and "You're the One that I Want" were written specifically for the screen version. This 1995 recording release of the '90s revival Broadway cast is very close to the 1994 version, although Brooke Shields has taken over for Rosie O'Donnell in the role of Betty Rizzo, the character who gets three of the showstoppers: "Greased Lightnin' Reprise," "Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee" and "There Are Worse Things I Could Do.." Shields makes for a pleasant surprise in the role. A good updated version of a classic show.
