Overview

The old king struggled, lifting his hand again. The prince smiled at the motion and placed his mouth to the old man's ear, feeling the heat of his skin on his lips. As he spoke his voice changed, as if another man were there. "It has started, my father," he whispered in a soft, evil hiss. "There is no turning back. You might as well lift your hand to stop the sunrise as to bring an end to this plan. Like your own death, it is inevitable. A new day is dawning, a day of secret alliances and powerful men, an age of ...

It will be an age of power and oppression far greater than has ever fallen on the earth. Even as I whisper to you, Father, even as my breath touches your ears, the great battle has started. The sun is setting on the frail world you have known. It is passing, and with its passing, the greater kingdom shall come."

A world poised at the brink of a disastrous war is unaware of the evil forces that will stop at nothing to achieve their arms. But in the midst of turmoil an impending doom, some of the Father's most valiant servants are in place--sons and daughters who may have the power to change the course of history. The third volume in The Great and Terrible series, The Second Sun, is a fast-paced, thrilling, action-packed story of war and intrigue by nationally bestselling author Chris Stewart.

Very Pleasing- takes patience to read!

This book, being the third in a series of six, was very pleasing. It wasn't my favorite book in the world, but I am expecting the next three books to improve.
These books could please all different types of genre lovers. Stewart throws in a variety of genres such as, war and adventure, religious views, business, mystery/ suspense, and romance. You would have to read the first two books before reading The Second Sun or else you would be completely lost though.
Chris Stewart's unique style of writing may be considered confusing and hard to follow but I personally love it, and you will too if you like a dash of mystery in your choice of reading. Stewart, throughout his books, will take 5-10 characters who are from around the world and tell their individual story and situation. Then as the story goes on, he brilliantly connects these characters. This reminds me of a movie, "Vantage Point" where the movie shows several peoples' points of view of one situation and in the end of the movie you understand how they are connected.
This story has characters with a wide range of beliefs and standards. My favorite character is this story would have to be either Sara Brighton, a mother of 3 boys and husband of General Neil Brighton, or Sam Brighton, one of the 3 Brighton boys who is serving as a U.S. soldier in Iraq. Both characters have an amazing quality of unselfishness and courage.
Chris Stewart is an LDS author and this affects the morals this book promotes and the lessons the author intended the reader to learn. I feel even though he was an LDs author and this was shown through his writing, the ultimate lesson that was intended in very universal for all ethnicities, religions, class, ages, and gender. This lesson or theme is, no matter how hard or long the road is, patience is important.
One problem I did find that disappointed me was it took a long time for the suspense to come. I felt like Stewart was trying to build up the excitement but if I had to grade him on this specific concept I would give him a B-. The last 8 chapters were very thrilling and unpredictable.
I really liked this book and it makes me so excited to read the next in the series. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a suspenseful novel. One thing you would might not to consider is this book does promote LDS teachings and principles so if you are not LDS you may find these things offensive and controversial so I do not recommend this book to the people who are not LDS unless that does not personally annoy you. Then I recommend it to ANYONE after that.
