Overview

This is the first book in the Great Battles Series for students in Grades 3-9. This series will transform the way we experience history. Great Battles is a unique look into specific battles affecting American History. Also included is a listing of other reading materials and movies that will help each student not only understand the history, but realize how it has shaped our world.

Great Battles takes young readers directly to the field of war. This first volume begins with Bunker Hill and the American Revolution then moves chronologically through United States history: The Alamo, The Civil War, Little Big Horn, San Juan Hill and World War I. (Later Great Battles will cover WWII in Europe and the Pacific, modern warfare, and Ancient battles). With historic photographs and maps, each chapter also offers an age-appropriate reading list, Internet resources and movies the whole family can watch. Even the most reluctant reader will be captivated by history shown through weapons, warfare and strategy. Learn how those ragtag American colonists beat the powerful British, why the Civil War so bloody, and how lloss at the Alamo ultimately led to Texas Independence. Great Battles is the perfect primer for creating a love of history in any child.

Meet the Author

Joe Giorello grew up in a large Italian family in Queens, New York hearing first-hand stories of relatives who served in World War II and Vietnam. Those stories sparked his love of history, and spurred him into studying military history. He's since acquired a vast library, stretching from ancient battles to modern warfare, and teaches a highly popular middle-grade class called "Great Battles." As both teacher and author, Joe's goal is to remind young people that "freedom isn't free" and that history is anything but boring. When he's not teaching about historic battles, weapons and warfare, Joe can be found playing blues around the Seattle area with his band, The Fabulous Roof Shakers.
