Great Bob Scobey and His Frisco Band, Vol. 2by Bob Scobey
Trumpeter Bob Scobey recorded three albums for his private Jansco label that were released posthumously. In 1997 they were reissued as two CDs by Jazzology. This second volume features a complete album from 1956 and the second half of Scobey's last session, from 1960. The earlier date has five Lizzie Miles vocals, three by Clancy Hayes and instrumental versions of "Blue Turning Grey Over You" and "Maple Leaf Rag." The singers are in top form, clarinetist Bill Napier and trombonist Jack Buck get some spots and Scobey plays in his prime. No surprises occur but the versions of such tunes as "I'm Confessin'," "I'm Sorry I Made You Cry" and "Nobody's Sweetheart Now" are enjoyable. The final five numbers from the 1960 album include "Under the Double Eagle" and "Bourbon Street Parade." Solid dixieland.
