Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lesley Moore Vossen
This book is part of the "Facts about Countries" series, which provides elementary school students with an overview of the people, culture, history, and geography of countries around the world. The first chapter, "Welcome to Great Britain," defines Great Britain as "made up of England and Scotland and the principality of Wales. Together with the province of Northern Ireland it is part of the United Kingdom." It does not, however, explain what is meant by a principality or a province. Chapters cover farming and fishing, resources and industry, transportation, education, sports, daily life and religion, arts, and government, among other topics. Each chapter spans two pages, and most have minimal text, many charts and at least one color photo per chapter. The chapter on "Transportation," for example, has only around 100 words but has a sidebar on highway links, a pie chart showing what kind of transportation travelers use, a bar chart showing the average distances people travel in a year by the main type of transportation, a bar chart on the total length of road, railroads, and canals, and a bar chart showing the number of airports by the length of the runways. At the end of the book, a database outlines other facts, such as the flag, the currency, major exports, holidays and religions. Another database lists important dates in Great Britain's history. This is book designed for third or fourth grade students who are writing a report on Great Britain. Somewhat dry and without the kind of information which would help students understand the culture of Great Britain, the book does contain almost every conceivable fact that elementary students would need to complete a report.
