Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The "Rookie Reader" series has been around for years and this is a new subseries entitled "Rookie Read to Learn: Animals." Bugs are generally small and often small young children are intrigued by something smaller than themselves. I used to be and still am fascinated by watching ants—leafcutters, army ants, and others. (How can these little creatures organize and handle weights many times that of their own bodies?) The kids in this short story are out to collect a variety of bugs. They have a jar and a net and off they go. They spy and capture ladybugs, aphids, and ants. They observe spiders, dragonflies, click beetles, earwigs, crickets, and stag beetles. The artist has labeled each so there is plenty of opportunity to learn the names of these bugs. After the story is finished there is a brief blurb about the author and illustrator followed by pages of activities. They include a sing-along to a familiar tune; a maze game, a description and counting exercise related to the body parts of bugs, and a bug hunt where the kids draw what they see. The final page contains a list of the 102 words that make up the story. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
