Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Anyone who owns or has used one of the titles from the Magill ``Great Events'' series will be familiar with the format of this set: five volumes, sturdily bound; entries arranged in chronological order and concentrating on American and western European events; a formal essay structure consisting of a summary of the event, its impact, an annotated bibliography, and cross references to related subjects; and special indexes allowing access by personal name, geographical region, subject/key word, and year. Entries average 2500 words; they are written with a restrained uniformity and are signed. As with most of the ``Great Events'' material, topics concern the 20th century, here ranging from 1897 to 1992. The set's U.S. focus means that culture is most often popular culture, which automatically generates debate regarding criteria for inclusion. The diversity of subject matter in the Magill series is one of its greatest strengths, and here you'll find a serious discussion of Homer Simpson as well as of Igor Stravinsky. The ``Impact of Event'' section of some entries is weak, being merely a recitation of the principle personage's activities rather than a true evaluation of influences and effects, but on the whole this is another satisfying set from Magill that gives concise but effective overviews of a broad scope of cultural topics from 20th-century history. For public and academic libraries.-- James Moffet, Baldwin P.L., Birmingham, Mich.
Booknews
This is the third set in Magill's distinguished Great Events from History II series (for a general description of the series and accolades for the previous sets, see Science and Technology Series in the December 1991 R&R Book News and Human Rights Series in the May 1993 R&R Book News--both reviews also available on Bowker's CD-ROM Books in Print with Book Reviews Plus). Beginning in 1897 with Stanislavsky's invention of method acting, and ending in 1992 with the culture controversies surrounding the Columbus Quincentennial, the new set presents 493 fascinating, original articles on topics spanning the cultural and artistic life of the modern world, from landmarks in the fine arts to developments in such popular genres as rock music and television comedy. The articles are intriguing in the unique breadth and originality of their take on modernity. Recommended for all collections. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
