What People Are Saying

Kelly Milner Halls
To understand the reach and depth of Steve Young's remarkably fresh perspective on the "F-word" ("failure," in this case, rather than the R-rated alternative), you have to peek into his personal history.

Young has known astonishing success in his own right, by any standard. He's written for such television industry staples as "The Tonight Show," "Boy Meets World," "Cybill," and the NEW "Family Affair" featuring Tim Curry as the NEW Mr. French. He's run comedy clubs in Philadelphia. He's been featured in print publications like the Los Angeles Times, National Lampoon and the Screen Actors Guild's, Written By magazine. He's even been contracted to write children's books.

But alongside this string of enviable accomplishments, he proudly lists life-changing failures -- failed college coursework, failed marriage, failed businesses, failed job endeavors, failed promotions, even failed game show contestant participation.

Why PROUDLY? Because, according to Young, "Overcoming obstacles is the key to turning 'I can't' into 'I will.'" And that is what this distinctive work of nonfiction compiled and lovingly edited by Steve Young is all about.

Through first person interviews with such luminary voices as Erin Brockovich, Jane Goodall, Larry Gelbart, Teddy Pendergrass, Chris Crutcher, Garry Marshall, Ann Richards, Al Franken, Ann Bancroft, Betty White, Billy Idol and many, many others, Young captures the heartbreak of failure and the success that so often slips in to fill that nasty void.

Divided into ten theme-specific chapters, Young's book says, "Don't quit!" in 60 dinstinctive ways. With celebrities from the realm of sports, music, journalism, literature, television, films, science and philosophy deftly offers something for everyone who's ever clung to hope or hopelessness.

Great Failures of the Extremely Successful is the perfect gift book for readers 14 and up -- a must for anyone who hopes to turn lemons into lemonade, again and again and again.

Great Failures of the Extremely Successful

I swore I'd never buy another motivational or self-help book again; they all included tall orders and asked that I wrap my brain around concepts I simply couldn't grasp or believe. This is more than a "self help/motivational" book; it's in a class by itself. Reading heartbreaking stories from famous people and subsequent victories truly inspired me. This book gives meaning to the "Where there's a will, there's a way" postulate. The title alone, "Great Failures of the Extremely Successful" was too curious to pass up. I found myself fascinated from page one--this guy (author, Steve Young) was talking about my life. And others like me! The mere notion of "failure" being a "plus" is brilliant. For the sophisticated cynic, the idealist, the average Joe/Josie, it's a MUST READ. It's a fresh, realistic perspective on life and living... through the good, the bad and all that happens in between. Barbara Kelly, Editor

Don't expect to succeed without it!

Failure is the stepping stone to success. I am inspired by seeing so many real-life examples collected here. How others have done it by finding and following a new fork in the road of life -- refusing to stop or go back. This isn't a one-time-read.
