Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The fairies are engaged in a race and the rules are simple—they cannot use their own feet or wings. Everyone has a different mode of transportation. Beck is riding on the back of a squirrel and Fawn and Rani choose a frog and dove respectively. Tink seems more inclined to go for automation, so she is driving a car that she has assembled from pots and pans. Lily decides to ride a giant snail. As they approach the finish line, a series of mishaps and disasters derail all of the contestants—Beck's squirrel runs off to play with a friend, Tink gets stuck in the mud, Fira's balloon springs a leak, Bess gets lost, Silvermist is caught in a spider web. Some regain control and the race is once again on, but Lily and her snail just keep moving slowly along and eventually cross the finish line—winners of the race. It is just a variation on the hare and the tortoise, only this version features several additional characters, all of whom are fairies. The moral—slow and steady wins the race. A "Step into Reading" book, Level 3, for children reading on their own. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
