I work in a school district whose theatre budget is minimal. My co-director and I find our costumes in thrift shops or give-away bins.
My historical file of period costumes is largely comprised of Dover Pulications of Tom Tierny figures. Each book has an introduction about the time period covered. Each plate has detailed information about fabrics and appropriate events to which these clothes would have been worn. The drawings are beautiful, true to original colors, and accurate.
The research is very thorough. The value is good for my purposes.
