Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-- Sitting Bull, Jesse James, Buffalo Bill, Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, Geronimo, Belle Starr, and Judge Roy Bean are all given the same treatment; first comes an introduction, and then a birth-to-demise biographical sketch, brief evaluation, chronology of significant events (both historical and personal), and an annotated list for further reading that separates books for YAs from those for adults. Readers may be daunted by the biography sections, which have many references to people, places, and dates. The writing style is informative but drab, and a few minor text errors are noticeable, if not confusing. Some of the black-and-white period photograph are faint and/or murky. Despite shortcomings (including a cover design that has the pizazz of a discarded burger wrapper), this is a useful collection. The biographical sketches are better researched than usual; ``Further Reading'' evaluations are a big plus; and the 11-page index is outstanding. --George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield
