Overview

Nearly 150 years have passed since H. B. Farnie's The Golfer's Manual was published in Scotland. In all that time there has been no comprehensive book that brings together the classic lessons of the great players and teachers of the game and presents that wisdom in their own words-until now.

Here, in one elegantly designed and illustrated volume, the men and women who both pioneered and popularized the game of golf provide instruction in every aspect of the sport. From H. J. Whigham's unified swing theory (1897) to Ben Hogan's modern fundamentals; from Joyce Wethered on visualizing the shot to Lee Trevino on psyching out your opponent, the 127 original, idiosyncratic, and trailblazing essays in this book represent the very best instruction from 1857 to the present. Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods, Harry Vardon, Butch Harmon, Bobby Jones, Nancy Lopez, Jack Nicklaus, Harvey Penick, Sam Snead, Dr. Bob Rotella, and Annika Sorenstam are among the 96 authors whose contributions are included in this must-have addition to every golfer's library.

Peary and Richardson Have Hit It Right Down The Middle Of The Fairway

It's the start of winter and two pursuits are uppermost in the golfer's agenda: begin to take picture perfect swings in the middle of the living room, and scour golf's masters of written instruction for the instructional gems that will make all the difference in next Spring's first round. These endeavors have just been eloquently facilitated and packaged upon the publication of 'Great Golf: 150 Years of Essential Instruction from the Best Players, Teachers, and Writers' edited by Danny Peary and Allen Richardson, a compendium of outstanding articles by the most well known tipsters spanning the past century and a half. Like Ben Hogan's swing itself, this project is both simply pure and deftly complex - 127 'trailblazing' essays divided into super headings (The Swing, The Short Game, etc.), each of these topics fully analyzed within chapters addressing common 19th hole deliberations such as grip, stance, sand play, chipping and pitching, putting, and of course the head game which permeates through all of them. What makes all of this intriguing reading on top of invaluable advice, is the chronological sequence of articles from early Vardon grip colloquies to Tiger Woods' 'I Dare You' challenge ('Try My Killer 2-Iron'). Not to drive links metaphors out of bounds, 'Great Golf' is truly like a classic 18 hole golf course - individual parts fully actualized on their own, while the whole fits together with a unique personality. For myself, the test was immediate and fortuitous - I was searching for a clear and definitive answer to why I tend to over swing on my back swing. The solution jumps out from the pages of one of the best chapters of 'Great Golf,' by one of the game's legendary players. I can't wait to get back out there on the first tee. A similar experience awaits anyone else who reads, has, or is given this fine addition to their golf library.
