Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Harry and Emily are finishing dinner when Harry remarks that the next day is Groundhog Day and that saying the word groundhog will bring good luck all year. Emily does not believe that or the story of the groundhog seeing its shadow as the bellwether of more winter weather. Emily decides that she wants it to be spring, so she tries to find a groundhog. First they have to find out what a groundhog looks like and a bit about its habitat. Once they learn that groundhogs live in holes outside, they decide to dig a few holes and put out some tempting snacks in the hope of luring one into their yard. They get plenty of squirrels and birds, but it does not look like any groundhog is going to appear. Never fear, Harry and Emily do get their wish and spring is just around the corner. This book from the "Harry and Emily Adventure" series is a Holiday House Reader, Level 2 (Reading level 2.6). 2006, Holiday House, Ages 5 to 7.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Puzzled by Harry's teacher's reference to Groundhog Day, two kittens embark on a research project. When neither books nor the magazines and newspapers in the recycling pile can furnish them with information on the animal, Harry and Emily turn to the computer. They try to entice a groundhog into their backyard with grapes, marshmallows, and cookies. The next day, they find that many other creatures enjoyed the snacks, and eventually a groundhog does turn up-to eat the floral table decoration. The story is pedestrian and the color cartoon illustrations are static. Arnold Lobel's stories about Frog and Toad (HarperCollins), Elissa Haden Guest's tales of Iris and Walter (Harcourt), and Else Holmelund Minarik's adventures of Little Bear and his friends (HarperCollins) are fresher and funnier easy readers.-Jane Barrer, Washington Square Village Creative Steps, New York City Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
