This book is highly recommended on its historical value alone. With the lack of history taught in high school and college courses covering the early to middle ages (300-1500 AD), this book came as a pleasant suprise for me. Granted, the Catholic disposition of the author will rub Protestants the wrong way in one section. His belief that in reality there is no 'Christian' religion, and that all non-Catholic break-offs are heretical will surely make the ecumenical types boil over. Don't pass over the book for this one reason, however, because if you truly read it as a scholar or student, you will see the point he is making throughout the book. And that point is that despite the threats that truly could and probably should have toppled western civilization, the Church has stood against these threats (heresies) and prevailed just as Jesus Christ said it would. Overall, I believe the author gives a very concise, balanced, and sweeping review of the major movements which threatened Western Civilization throughout this time period, and how the Church responded to these threats.
