Overview

The Wheel of Time turns and ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the age that gave it birth returns again. For centuries, gleemen have told the tales of The Great Hunt of the Horn. So many tales about each of th Hunters, and so many Hunters to tell of...Now the Horn itself is found: the Horn of Valere long thought only legend, the Horn which will raise the dead heroes of the ages. And it is stolen.

The eagerly awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed and national bestseller The Eye of the World. The monumental task of retrieving the lost Horn of Valere--the legendary horn that will raise the dead heroes of the Ages--rests on the shoulders of Rand al'Thor. Rand begins the long journey of discovery--a journey that starts with The Great Hunt.

What People Are Saying

John Lee
Those who like fantasy can rejoice. This is the genuine article...characters you can care about, a world you can believe in, hideous monsters, battles, magic, even love.
Morgan Llywelyn
On very rare occasions, very talented storytellers create worlds that are beyond fantasy; worlds that become realities. In the Great Hunt, Robert Jordan gives us such a world.

Meet the Author

Robert Jordan
Robert Jordan
A Vietnam veteran who got his start in fantasy by extending the popular Conan the Barbarian series, Robert Jordan introduced a series of his own in 1990 and became a cult favorite. The Wheel of Time saga casts an epic struggle against evil in a complex, compelling world that keeps bringing readers back.

Biography

Robert Jordan was born in 1948 in Charleston, South Carolina, where he lived with his wife, Harriet, in a house built in 1797. He taught himself to read when he was four (with the incidental aid of a twelve-years-older brother) and was tackling Mark Twain and Jules Verne by five. After graduating from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, with a degree in physics, he served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Army, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star with "V", and two Vietnamese Crosses of Gallantry. A history buff, he also wrote dance and theater criticism. In September, 2007, Jordan died from complications of a rare blood disease. He was 58 years old.

    Leaves you wanting more

Although I'm sure this book stands alone as a good read, I can only recommend starting from the first, The Eye of the World, and continuing onward. This is a great series; the characters are awesome and you will want to be one of them. The women rock, and are in no way to be confused with drippy, moony, boring, shrieky, ditzy dipsticks with heaving bosoms so common in much of the genre. These gals will kick your sorry bum! Though a fantasy world, the books traffic in the collision of cultures from martial to natural, fundamentalist to liberal and everything in between. It's a really neat way of considering any kind of cultural conflict, in addition to a rip-roaring good story. Pick these books up and dig in to this world!

    Excellent Sequel

After finishing The Eye of the World I felt a bit let down by the hyped series, however The Great Hunt really made me an enthusiastic WoT fan. The Great Hunt was an excellent book with an exciting plot and the characters became very well developed, and the world became a rich and developed world.

    Could use some editing

Loved this book, but like The Eye of The World, I thought that Jordan gets so verbose in the first couple of chapters, that its hard to get too deeply into his world soon enough to continue on. The sequence in which Rand is seeking to escape Dal Fara goes on forever and I thought at times that the entire book would be just that. If he entered one more room and described it down to cracks in the floor, I was going to put the book down forever. Comparitively, the final battle at Falme, what I thought was some great suspense writing, takes 3 pages at best. I'm certainly going to continue with the series, but hope that it doesn't bog down again.

the best book series to ever come into this world

Robert Jordan is pure genious! He is the most amazing author to come into this world. I have read through his 4th book (The Shadow Rising) and I am never dissapointed with anything that Robert has dished out towards us, the readers. Among all of his books that I have read so far, I think that The Great Hunt would have to be the most enchanting one yet. With non-stop action around every corner. It is truly amazing. The Great Hunt shows the struggle of a young man chosen to live a life that could mean the end of the whole world if he becomes mad. He was chosen to be the dragon reborn, followed by some other Ta'veren, who also happen to be close friends of his. The story brings new heroes and more amazing events than the first, in this massive story of magical sedai and warriors in this gigantic world of fantasy. Robert Jordan...Bravo!!!!!!!!

    Captivating series

I have read the entire series twice. Am glad to have it on my Nook because my books are falling apart. Some of the books can get a bit repetitive, but they are worth working your way through. Great fable!

    Great Adventure

The detail in which Jordan paints this story puts the reader in a magical world full of adventure, peril, and victory. One of the few authors that can put me in the story. A long read, but worth every word.

As good as the first in the series

It may be overkill but I just finished this book - for the second time - and am looking forward to the third. I had to go back to reread both "The eye of the World" and "The Great Hunt" because of the sheer number of charactes that sort of get mention then later are discovered to be weighty characters. I'm a bit at odds on whether Robert Jordan gives enough character developent or not. However, there is a lot of detail I discover in the second reading that help by discovering interesting bits that previously made little impression. I do find it easy to get into the story and into the many charactes within it no matter who they give their loyalty to - although that seems to change sometimes. I highly recommend this book as part of the series. I doubt I would have been able to have read this one cold without having to go back and read the first. Now, on to "The Dragon Reborn"....

    Great Read

I loved the first book, and this one was just as great. If you love fantasy you will like this book, the characters are so real and you will fall in love when them. It is almost killing me that i can't read faster to find out what happens next.

    Highly Recommended

The Great Hunt is the second book of the Wheel of Time series by author Robert Jordan, and not surprisingly also a thrilling adventure book just as was The Eye of the World. First off if you have not read the first book then do so now before you begin to read The Great Hunt, because you would be hard pressed to understand what is going on in this book without having read the first. After saving the world for the first time in the last book Rand has now basically begun to try and fulfill prophesies to find out if he is truly the Dragon Reborn. This is a great book for anyone who is looking to leave reality and dive head first into a world of fantasy and adventure. Robert Jordan does a great job in this book to make a childish fantasy feel very mature and entertaining for adults. Through his dedication to make every one of his characters seem real and unique he makes readers feel like they are actually part of the book. As with the first book the events might seem a little confusing and frustrating to understand but they end up making sense in the grand scheme of things. To put into perspective, the book is a mix of Harry Potter, and The Lord of the Rings, but due to Jordan's writing style the book seems more realistic and is far more sophisticated than either of the other books. Jordan goes to the extreme of putting detail into the book and at times it seems almost superfluous to have that much detail about any one thing that he is describing, but in the end it makes for an amazing read.
The bottom line is I would recommend this book to anyone.

    I Also Recommend:

A unique world with more detail than some can handle

This is the second book in the series. The first book was a pleasure. It compares to Dune or the Hobbit in that you can immerse yourself in this fantasy world without being jerked back to reality by silly contradictions or over-the-top weirdness. Robert Jordan developed his characters to a point where every reader will find him or herself empathic to a favoite character, (or two).
Oh... that's right, I am supposed to review the 2nd book. The Great Hunt picks up where The Eye of the World left off. Therein lies part of the problem. It is a series, and while I do not mind the author recalling descriptions of people or events from the Eye of the World, he does a disservice by rehashing every last detail. I KNOW who is tall and who is short. I KNOW that this city is the largest one in this fantasy world. Please do NOT describe it all again... and again... and again. If the story was not so closely woven, book to book, I'd suggest you skip this one. (I am on book 3, and though the author commits the sin yet again, there are events and surprises to warrant the read).
If you are a patient reader, have at it. I scan the repetitive descriptions to jump three pages to the next significant event.
The storyline IS a great one. Robert Jordan's unique treatment of the male - female relationship is enjoyable and at times comical, though always thoughful and consistent. Action in the Great Hunt is often more a threat than a promise. As Fantasy, the story excels. While various characters have supernatural powers, the treatment is crafty and measured so you don't have to take an incredulous pause. The author is creative and thoughful in weaving this fantasy.
Make the Great Hunt a quick read, so you can get to a more fulfilling The Dragon Reborn.

Wheel of Time - It gets better and better

I began reading this series a few months ago. Robert Jordan was an unknown to me. I devoured vol 1 in a week and wasted no time in purchasing vol 2, The Great Hunt. Excellent series so far. I am 3/4 of the way through the book and cannot wait for the next volume " The Dragon Reborn". I recommend this series to any fantasy / Science Fiction reader out there. I have not enjoyed a series this much in quite a long time.
