Great Northern? is the concluding tale of the Ransome children's classics. Starring the original cast of the Walkers and the Blacketts (plus Uncle Jim/Captain Flint, of course, and even Dick and Dora), they trek to the far north of the British Isles in search of adventure. The children are all much older than when we first met them, and there is a certain undefineable air of finality that threads its way through it.
Nevertheless, the novel spirit of adventure is still there, no matter how much more mature the characters may be. This adventurousness, coupled with an underlying message of common-sense environmentalism, make for a good story and a satisfying end to the series.
I personally do not enjoy this one as much as the earlier books, perhaps because of the strange setting in Scotland. Still, I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Ransome, sailing, and practical and wholesome children's books.
