Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As with other books in the "Spyglass Book" series, this entry focuses on a specific topic, in this case, oceans. The book opens with a photograph of the earth, which shows how much of the earth's surface is covered with water. Readers are then given a definition of an ocean and are introduced to the main oceans. Beginning with the largest ocean, the Pacific, author Waters discusses the oceans by providing interesting information about each one. Readers learn about ocean life and ways to protect our oceans. This book can be used in connection with both social studies and science, and because new vocabulary words appear in bold the first time they are mentioned, it can be helpful in building vocabulary. Like other books in this series, this book is complete with a table of contents, a glossary and an index. Children are also given Web sites and the names of other books to learn more about the topic. The print is large and suitable for early readers. Each page is filled with a variety of colorful illustrations that range from drawings and maps to photographs. In addition to the illustrations, there are also fun facts included on most of the pages. 2003, Compass Point Books, Ages 4 to 7.
