Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
A part of "The Olympics" series, this fact-filled volume introduces the young reader to incredible moments in the Olympics. Included are stories of amazing times athletes overcame physical limitations or personal tragedy to participate. Racial prejudices caused boycotts but the Games also provided shining examples of races overcoming prejudice as one black and one white African ran a victory lap together in 1992. Shocking incidences such as terrorism or cheating are explained. Lists are provided of athletes who have won multiple and/or consecutive medals. An Olympic timeline highlights important milestones. Both oldest and youngest medal winners are highlighted in lists of statistics for both the Summer and the Winter Games. Brightly colored fact boxes and color photographs along with charts and maps give a brief view of the Olympics through the years. Words appearing in bold print are defined in the glossary. A list of books and websites for further information and an index are included. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson
