Overview

At 19 years old, Jordan Rubin was a healthy 6'1" and 180 pounds. Shockingly, his weight fell to just 104 lbs. in a matter of months. His immune system was at an all-time low, as he suffered from Crohn's disease, food allergies, anemia, fibromyalgia, intestinal parasites, and a host of other conditions. After seeing over 70 health professionals, using both conventional and alternative medicines, Rubin was sent home in a wheelchair to die.

But his story didn't end there. Through determination and a powerful faith in God, Rubin refused to give in to disease. Instead, he educated himself on natural health (eventually becoming a doctor of naturopathic medicine), and applied its principles. Now, ten years later, Rubin is fully recovered-and he desires to share the keys to his own good health. These keys aren't just for the disease-ridden; they are for anyone desiring to live an abundant life of health and wellness.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Riddled by immune deficiencies, Rubin spent most of his sophomore year of college coping with, among other things, a combination of Crohn's disease, intestinal parasites and fibromyalgia. His six-foot frame dropped more than 100 pounds and he sought nutritional balance in a wide variety of places. His experience and ultimate recovery-brought about by a devout faith in God and natural medicine-led him to pursue doctorates in naturopathic medicine, nutrition and natural therapies. On the heels of his national bestseller The Maker's Diet, the thirty-year-old Rubin offers this seven-part plan for a healthy lifestyle, based predominately on dietary and hygienic precepts outlined in the Bible. After years of tinkering with his own dietary restrictions and needs, he advocates a 50-day regimen of whole foods, supplemental vitamin cocktails, fasting and functional exercise. (Responsibly, he reminds readers not to make any drastic changes in diet or lifestyle without first consulting a physician.) Nonbelievers may have a hard time balancing some of his assertions as a Bible literalist with his lack of medical degree, though contributing writer Remedios lends credibility as a general practitioner. However, no one can dispute Rubin's commitment to his faith and his lifestyle. (Jan. 10) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Library Journal
In Rubin's latest book-see also his massive best seller, The Maker's Diet-the titular "Great Physician" is God, and the RX is a sevenfold plan crafted from an idiosyncratic blend of Old and New Testament ideas. The author, a Messianic Jew, tells us he writes for God's chosen people, whom he identifies as Christians. Most of his recommendations are wholesome: eat well, be hygienic, think loving thoughts, and exercise. Readers who attempt faithful adherence, however, will likely struggle with complex rules that are not generally recognized to be beneficial. For example, Rubin recommends against shellfish and pork and outlines burdensome hand-washing procedures. More seriously, the author's credentials and products are untrustworthy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration web site shows that it formally advised Rubin's company in 2004 that its claims for its nutritional supplements are unfounded and illegal. Rubin also tells us that he has earned two doctorates; his web site (www.makersdiet.com) lists the conferring schools as the People's University of the Americas School of Natural Medicine and the Academy of Natural Therapies, the first being a nonaccredited school that has no campus, the second a nonaccredited correspondence school that was sued and closed by the state of Hawaii. To boot, Rubin's certification as nutritional consultant was conferred by the American Association of Nutrition Consultants, which requires only payment of $60 and passage of a test based on materials that the National Council Against Health Fraud characterizes as quackery. Like his previous three books, this one tells the story of Rubin's journey from illness to health. This repetitiveness and the fact that readers are directed to Rubin's web site, which promotes his questionable nutritional products, make this book a kind of infomercial. Not recommended, though note that the publisher has planned a million-dollar marketing blitz.-Noemie Maxwell, King Cty. Lib. Syst., WA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

At a glance, this book can be a little intimidating. Judging from the cover and thickness, I expected the wording to be very technical and full of medical jargon. Not so, in fact it was a page-turner. I'm so glad I have added The Great Physician's Rx to my arsenal of spiritual reference books. If you're looking for a guideline on how to overcome health and spiritual issues based on a dietary/biblical approach, this book is a must have!!

I so appreciate all the work and research that Jordan Rubin has put into this book. There is so much beneficial information not only concerning a healthful diet, but all aspects of your well being. The most wonderful thing about it is that you know this is not just another fad diet, but a lifestyle change based on Biblical truths.
