Let's face it, all gardeners know that it's the ultimate reference guide. The downfall of the book is that it's expensive and too bulky to drag to gardening stores or into your backyard. The publishers at DK recognized that gardeners loved it but wanted a tote-size book, so they created AHS Great Plant Guide, one of the best reference guides to be published this season.
What makes this book so good? First of all, it's the size of my hand. Seriously. That means I can toss it into my handbag when I go to purchase plants. I can have soiled hands and grab the book, knowing that the cover can be easily wiped down. And I can lend the chubby book to friends without worrying if I will get it back, as this book doesn't come with an exorbitant price tag.
But the reason AHS Great Plant Guide is a real treasure is the vast amounts of information packed into its 574 pages. Listed alphabetically with the botanical name, more than 2,000 trees, shrubs, climbers, bulbs, perennials, annuals, and biennials are described for every garden situation. Symbols used in the guide indicate soil-moisture preferences, sun preferences, and the USDA hardiness zones for the plants, providing you with some guidance when gardening. This book also has a "shopping list" section with plants for every purpose, including attracting birds and creating shaded areas. Most of the featured plants come with glossy color photographs for easyidentification.
The AHS Great Plant Guide is a wonderful companion to the The American Horticultural Society A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants, but it also stands well on its own; it is certain to rank up there with other must-have garden reference guides.
