Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Morgan is not as good at sports as his friend Charlie, but he's a whiz at video games. But Charlie wants Morgan to sign up with him for Soccer. Morgan agrees but soon is sorry he has volunteered. His first attempts are terrible. And worse, Aldeen Hummel, a girl who causes everyone grief, has also signed up. Soon, Aldeen is bossing the entire soccer team and running over everyone in her plays. Morgan is stuck. He wants to quit but feels he can't. When Morgan sees his mother talking to Aldeen's mother, who is just as weird as her daughter, he wonders why she is doing this, but eventually learns a lesson in reaching out to others. When Aldeen decides to drop out of Soccer, Morgan goes to her home and tries to get her to rejoin. It doesn't work but Aldeen does show up for the last game. Author Staunton does a nice job in this short novel. His approach is snappy with lots of dialogue and action. He manages to put in humor and even a message or two about teamwork and responsibility. The illustrations are in black and white. 2001, Formac Publishing, $3.99. Ages 8 to 10. Reviewer: Della A.Yannuzzi
