Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Say "great white shark," and capture the interest of young readers everywhere! This book, part of the "Discover Sharks" series, includes lots of information about these popular ocean dwellers. First of all: is the great white a fish? Yes! Although known for its fierce appearance, big and pointy teeth, and torpedo-shaped body, the great white is basically a fish. This particular fish has a large dorsal fin on its back and a huge vertical fin on its tail for better swimming. In fact, this shark is a super swimmer and can even leap out of the water. All this, plus a keen sense of smell, make great whites great predators. Especially interesting is the picture—life-sized—of sharks' teeth. As the author points out, when one tooth falls out, another takes its place. The shark's habitat contains a buffet of critters it loves to eat: fish, sea birds, seals, dolphins, and small ocean mammals. The great white's coloring (dark backs and white underbellies) help it to swim undetected. Baby sharks, called pups, are born alive and big—about fifty-one inches long. That is one big fish! This book has a lively format. Its photo illustrations are close-up and colorful and its text simple enough for a very young reader to understand. Unfortunately, the poor contrast between dark water and text labels on pages six and seven make that page-spread impossible to read except in very bright light. The book is sure to catch even a reluctant reader's eye. It includes a simple glossary. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
