Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In this companion volume to the award-winning Great American Trials (LJ 2/15/94), Knappman, who edited that work, has compiled a subjective and encyclopedic narrative of 100 international trials of historical, political, or social significance. These accounts make for interesting if superficial reading for the idle curious; Knappman did not intend to appeal to legal researchers. However, some trials seem to have been included for their sensational value rather than their place in history, such as the trial of Rosemary West, "Britain's most notorious female serial killer." Many names arep not familiar from browsing any of the four tables of contents (alphabetically, by country, by crime, by date), but upon further examination they put current events in context. (The trial of Lori Berenson, the young American convicted of terrorism charges and sentenced to life imprisonment in Peru, provides some background to the recent hostage situation there, for example.) Entries are arranged chronologically and feature essays that include the crimes charged, defense and prosecuting counsel, verdict and sentence, historical significance, and a short list of titles for further reading that would not supersede or replace a good subject bibliography. While this would not be useful for academic and law libraries with more extensive research tools, it may appeal to small public libraries with limited resources.-Kathie J. Sullivan, McNamee, Lochner, Titus & Williams Lib., Albany, N.Y.

Gr 8 UpThis companion volume to Knappman's Great American Trials (Gale, 1993) looks beyond U.S. borders. Criteria for selection includes the political or historical ramifications of each trial, as well as the extent of its public attention. The text not only educates readers, but also entertains them, by first providing concise synopses of each case and its players, date, and outcome and then delving into a narrative description that explains the circumstances leading to the trial, the legal maneuverings, and any subsequent appeals. Captioned black-and-white photographs, drawings, and maps, as well as suggestions for further reading supplement the text. The comprehensive index is helpful in finding a specific name or case; the tables of contents group trials according to crimes charged, location, and name. A resource that fills a need for legal reference books geared toward general readers.J. E. Brunsdale, Milner Library, Illinois State University, Normal, IL
