Overview

Too many people assume the timeless principles of true leadership—of helping others achieve their full potential—don’t apply Monday through Friday during work hours or in any circumstance where a paycheck is involved.

In GREATER THAN YOURSELF, Steve Farber proves them wrong: in this powerful and inspiring story, Farber shows that the goal of a genuine leader is to help others—teammates, employees, and colleagues—become more capable, confident, and accomplished than they are themselves. Through the actions of a forward-thinking and extraordinarily successful CEO, Farber reveals the three keys to achieving this: Expand Yourself, Give Yourself, and Replicate Yourself.

Filled with actionable principles and innovative ideas, GREATER THAN YOURSELF is perhaps the most powerful message today’s business leaders can learn.

Should be part of every leaders library

Good opportunity for reflection about where our own egos take us. A way to see leadership as boosting others not trampling them.

    more from this reviewer

Filled with actionable principles and innovative ideas, GREATER THAN YOURSELF is perhaps the most powerful message today's business leaders can learn.

The "GTY" approach is the central message of Greater Than Yourself: The Ultimate Lesson of True Leadership by Steve Farber. I recently read this book and couldn't agree more with the premise. In summary, the book is about the value of always having a project where you are giving of yourself.

The GTY - or Greater Than Yourself - philosophy is about going out of your way to help others experience success, perhaps even helping them to be more successful than you are! On the surface that may make you anxious. Perhaps you might fear that it will take something away from you. Imagining it might stoke your competitive spirit. But, within this movement there isn't room for you to be feeling competitive with those you mentor.

The book is written in parable form - and I always enjoy a parable because it's so easy to read. This book was no exception. I read it in one sitting and really loved the concept. Wouldn't it be great if we ALL did that? If we all reached out and had a giving heart and generous attitude. I know that personally it has always come back to me tenfold when I've shared with others and boosted them up. It really is a great feeling being part of someone else's success.

The parable itself wasn't the strongest I'd ever read; it was a little cutesy and that may pose a distraction for some readers. The value of this book is really the concept and that it's a feel-good story. The GTY idea is described as a being a step above the golden rule, like taking that universal rule of doing unto others and raising the bar a bit.

Readers who are looking for leadership how-to may not be fulfilled by this book, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an easy leadership read that will leave them feeling inspired to make a difference through mentoring and a generous approach to networking.

    Farber's Greatest Yet

Humanity has a knack of complicating things. Steve Farber's gift to all of us is his ability to take what we normally perceive to be complicated issues and simplify them. He has done it once again with his new book, "Greater Than Yourself."

It couldn't have been released at a more appropriate time. Business--all organizations for that matter--are desparate to engage their employees and members and the resources to do it are decreasing. Through "Greater Than Yourself" we learn there is no shortage of the one resource we truly need; ourselves!

This is a great book! I could have read it in a couple hours if I wasn't stopping every other page to reflect and write notes in the margins. Thanks, Steve, for your greatest book yet!

So much more than a leadership theory, Greater Than Yourself is a way of life.

Mindsets are a funny thing, when people adopt the right one they can radically change their own life as well as the lives of those around them. I've met a few folks in my life who are the absolute embodiment of Greater Than Yourself, for them this book will seem a parable of their own lives. For the rest of us, we should strive to live out the GTY principles of Extend Yourself, Give Yourself, and Replicate Yourself on a daily basis.

We should be driving GTY in our organizations as well as in our family and community lives. Call it biblical, call it selfless, call it revolutionary - I see GTY as a "must live by" philosophy and one that anyone responsible for leading and developing people should be intimately familiar with - and actively living.

If more people practiced Steve's GTY...our economy WOULD NOT be in such dire straits.

GTY...Revolutionary and relatable. Selfless not selfish. "Simple" epiphanies. Radically relevant. Embraceable. Challenging.

"It only takes a spark..." and what a beautiful "firestorm" GTY would create IF practiced in the worlds of business, education and government.

Steve, you knocked another one out of the park! Musically speaking, you have "perfect pitch!"

    "Pay It Forward" For Leaders

I'm a big fan of the Steve Farber series of books, "The Radical Leap", "The Radical Edge" and this latest addition "Greater Than Yourself". This is truly a paradigm changing work. In addition to being a visionary who is constantly pushing the envelope of what it means to be an effective leader, Farber is a fabulous storyteller. GTY is a real page turner. I had to read it in one sitting. I strongly recommend this book with out hesitation.
